Literacy Without Labels
Don't label the reader.
Get curious about the reading.
Spoiler alert
You are not a good reader.
Reading is complex and contextual. The same person may read one text with ease and struggle with another. A difficulty is not an identity.
What if we got curious instead?
Reader, text, task, purpose, and context all matter. The idea of a “good reader” or a “bad reader” misses what is actually happening.
Errors are information. Metacognition makes the unseen visible.
Readers know things about their own reading that educators cannot know without asking. Educators bring expertise about literacy, learning, assessment, and instruction. The work is collaborative.
